Mercury is the most potent neurotoxin known to man. Nothing affects your brain more drastically and critically, mercury doesn't break down in the body or in the environment. It just keeps accumulating.
So, it’s vital to monitor potential sources of mercury and reduce people’s exposure wherever possible.
One of the easiest and best ways to do that is by the use of CKIC’s new mercury analyser.
The 5E-HGT2320 will directly determine total mercury in materials such as Coal, Oil, Soil, Food, Feed, Fertiliser, Ore, Wastewater and Sludge.
Samples are introduced directly into the instrument and the result is obtained in five minutes. There is no need for preparation saving time and money over traditional methods.
Operation couldn’t be easier. The sample is placed into a boat and weighed. Powerful software takes over and completes the test automatically. Up to 70 samples can be loaded and analysed sequentially.
5E-HGT2320 employs the thermal decomposition process described in U.S. EPA Method 7473.
The operating sequence is as follows.
Firstly the samples are dried and the released moisture is discharged in the form of vapor through a three-way valve. The sample is then thermally decomposed in an oxygen environment and the decomposition products are carried by oxygen flow to the catalytic section of the furnace, where oxidation is completed and all interfering substances, such as halogens and oxides of nitrogen and sulfur are eliminated. The remaining decomposition products are then carried into a gold amalgamator where the mercury is selectively trapped.
The system continues to be flushed with oxygen until the remaining decomposition products are removed from the system and then the amalgamator is rapidly heated releasing the trapped mercury. The vapour is swept through a 253.7nm wavelength atomic absorption spectrophotometer and mercury concentration is measured via absorbance peak height or peak area.
Sample weights of up to 1.5g can be run with a detection limit of 0.001 ng Hg.
