China-Bangladesh joint venture begins ceramic tiles production

China-Bangladesh joint venture has invested Tk950 crore for manufacturing high quality and colourful tiles
Southeast Union Ceramic Industries Limited (SEUCIL), a coal-based ceramic company, has begun production with a capacity of 2.69 lakh square feet tiles per day to meet local demands.
Established on an 11.20-acre land at Katakhali in Bagerhat district, the China-Bangladesh joint venture has invested Tk950 crore for manufacturing high quality and colourful tiles.
SM Amzad Hossain, chairman of Southeast Union Ceramic Industries, inaugurated the production last Friday.
“We have set up the coal-based ceramic industry because it confirms more stable and safe gas supply compared to gas-based ceramic industries in Bangladesh,” said Amzad.
It is fully automated with environmentally friendly protection system based on international standards, he added.
“We have installed dust cleaning and sulfur removal equipment and also water treatment system to recycle waste water.”
Currently, the company employes about 1,050 technical staff and workers, of which 30% are women. There are also 50 people from Chinese. The Chinese supervisors will train the Bangladesh workers day by day.
With the installed capacity, the company will manufacture twenty five thousand square metre tiles equivalent to 2.69 lakh square feet per day at the first phase.
The production capacity would increase to 4.30 lakh square feet per day after completion of second phase within the next five months.
According to the company, all raw materials including coal have been imported from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and India to meet the demand of the industry.
